Talking Point

  • Today we look at the iTraxx 5yr Europe & the iTraxx Senior & Sub financial indices performance since the 1st of July.
  • Given that credit markets have been sending increasingly loud signals of stress building up beneath the surface, today it is fitting to review the recent widening translated into these core indices.
  • All 3 have widened steadily over the period with Europe +23%, Senior +30%, Sub +34%, a persistent H2 deterioration, which accelerated sharply from mid-September.
  • The ‘main’ Europe index breaching 55 was a significant psychological blow for investors.
  • Financials are underperforming, with the Senior/Europe ratio widened from 1.06x to 1.12x, while the Sub/Europe ratio has shifted from 1.73x to 1.87x.
  • The Sub-Senior gap has blown out ~38%, from ~34.5bps to ~47.8bps.
  • The move off summer lows has been profound & swift. From early-August troughs, Senior is +17.7bps & Sub +33.4bps.
