Commentary & Deal Flow

CreditFlow: End of Day (Europe IG)

IGC European Market: Commentary - Close
  • With many issuers having been sat on the sidelines, today presented a window of opportunity, though largely by virtue of the fact that there was little new ‘bad news’ or any meaningful developments in the multiple geo-political issues that are restricting primary market activity & putting pressure on spreads
    • Spreads remain wide, though tightened slightly today
    • Geo-political issues are subdued yet still very much present
  • Fed tomorrow
    • FOMC - Rate announcement @ 6:00pm GMT on Wednesday 28th
      • ‘Hold’ expected with Hawkish tone (9.4% probability of rate hike)

CORP:

  • 2nd heaviest day of supply in 7 weeks (€9.025bn on 9th Sept), second only to yesterday’s €7.3bn
    • P&G’s print was the surprise of the day. €3.25bn, with an avg,. spread compression of 25.5bps, 5bps more than the upper end of what would have been required for a smaller print. They paid up for size, but it paid off
      • Books not disclosed as SEC Registered
    • Enexis is a quasi-sovereign with an implicit guarantee, albeit not explicit. A quality utility with a treble digit spread was always going to fare well. NIC of 5bps was all that was needed. Best book of the day at 6.2 X
    • Schlumberger’s €750m long 8yr, was not an opportunistic print as proceeds were required to both help refi a €1bn that matured last month, & in part towards a recent acquisition (details below). A NIC of +10bps was in line with its ratings & expectations. The book was solid if not spectacular at 2.6 X
    • Endenred offered a NIC of 25bps for their 2yr FRN, yet the book was still small. While PM’s are in a risk averse mood, 2yrs is arguably too short, as it accelerates reinvestment risk, increasing investors’ need to be placated with spread
      • The long 7yr was larger with a cover of 1.7 X

FIG:

  • Financials returned for the first time since last Thursday
    • Argenta Spaarbank’s 3yr green, covered trade had a generous NIC of 9bps. Above the recent avg. of c.+5bps, the final spread facilitated the desired size of €750m. Cover was a solid 4.0 X
      • The first covered trade since last Wednesday.
    • SEB’s Green, senior non-preferred offered a NIC of 12bps, a couple of bps above what might have been expected, yet they secured a solid print with a healthy book (2.27 X)
    • Mercialys REIT trade struggled to get momentum, launching at IPTs. The trade offered a disproportionately large NIC of 47bps yielding a cover of only 1.65 X

SSA:

  • The SSA pipeline cleared once again
  • Free State of Thuringia’s 8yr LSA trade managed to price €650m. Initially seems small, yet it is in keeping with their typical trades & funding needs. Low cover of 1.27 X

  • Bunds rallied with the curve steepening by c.3bps
  • OAT’s rallied inside 5yrs with the curve steepening by c.2bps
    • OAT vs Bund 10yr spread came in c.1.5bps from yesterday, currently trading at +155.8
  • Gilts rallied beyond 7yrs with the curve flattening by c.1bp
  • € swap curve steepened by c.4bps
    • € swap spreads tightened by c.1 to 2bps from short to long across the curve
  • £ swap curve was unchanged
    • £ swap spreads c.1 to 1.5bp tighter 5yrs & out
  • € IG delivered €7.75bn from 8 deals (4 x Corp, 3 X FIG & 1 x SSA) via 12 tranches
    • €16.55bn WTD or 85.4% of our ‘Supply Survey’ forecast of €19.38bn
  • US$ Reg S priced $750m from 1 deal (1 x FIG) via 1 tranche
    • 1st Reg S $ print since Santander UK’s €1.5bn on the 1st of September
  • Zero issuance in the Sterling (£), non-domestic Swiss Franc markets
  • Today’s “Talking Point” (below) looks at US$ Reg S only IG supply YTD, following the first such print today in 8 weeks.
  • iTraxx 5yr Europe & the iTraxx Senior & Sub financial indices tightened for a second straight session currently trading at 64.58 (-3.6%), 73.218 (-3.6%) & 123.981 (-5.01%) respectively (as we print & % △ on the day).
  • Vix Index was lower, currently at 17.54 (18.39 this morning)
  • Brent Crude fell in the afternoon, currently at c.$114.04 (c.$115.75 this morning)
  • European equity bourses were mixed with the FTSE down by -0.7% & the Dax & CAC 40 both up by +0.85% & +0.65% respectively
    • YTD: FTSE ↑7.66%, Dax ↑4.65% & CAC 40 ↓3.08%
  • A breakdown of today’s primary € IG supply is as follows

  • Corporate
    • Total IG: €5.3bn
    • Avg. tranche size €663m
    • Avg. IPT to Pricing -25.19

Talking Point

  • Prudential Funding Asia’s $750m 10yr Tier 2 today, represented the 1st Reg S $ European IG print in 8weeks. As such we look today at all US$ Reg S only IG supply YTD & how thin the market has become since the summer.
  • Today breaks one of the longest droughts of the year. Prudential is the first US$ Reg S trade since Santander UK’s $1.5bn 3yr Covered on the 1st of September, ending a run of 39 blank sessions. The previous longest gap YTD was 25 sessions (10th Feb to 18th Mar).
  • Since the summer, supply has all but dried up. H1 delivered $24.5bn from 26 deals (79.7% of YTD volume), averaging c.$4.08bn a month. Since July only 6 deals have priced for $6.5bn: L-Bank $1.5bn 3yr (22nd Jul), NatWest Markets $500m 5yr FRN (17th Aug), Lloyds $1.5bn 3yr Covered (18th Aug), Mitsui & Co $750m 5yr (20th Aug), Santander UK $1.5bn 3yr Covered (1st Sep) & today’s Prudential.
  • SSA has disappeared. Having carried H1 ($15.8bn), SSA has been absent since L-Bank on the 22nd of July. Covered has filled some of the gap, with $3bn (48%) of post-July volume. Today is also the first subordinated Reg S FIG since Marex on the 2nd of June.
  • UK issuers now dominate, accounting for 4 of the 6 deals since July ($4bn, 64%);  level with Germany on deal count YTD (7 each) for $5.65bn. Germany remains the largest by volume ($9.45bn, 30.7%), all agency & Länder supply, but has been absent since July. France ($5bn), the Netherlands ($3.5bn) & Japan ($2.25bn) complete the top five, with Japan the only APAC issuer (3 deals).

    • P&G last came to the public € markets on the very same day in 2025, with a €1bn SEC Registered, dual-tranche, comprised of a €500m 8yr at MS+42 (38bps tighter than IPTs from a €1.2bn book), & a €500m 20yr at MS+78 (44.5bps tighter than IPTs from a €1.7bn book). Prior to that in April 2024 was another dual-tranche made up of a €650m 4yr & a €850m 10yr.

    • Enexis is a publicly owned distribution system operator from the Netherlands that develops, manages, & maintains regional electricity & gas distribution networks. It last came to the public bond markets in February of last year when it priced a €750m 6yr at MS+55 (32.5bps tighter than IPTs from a book of €1.35bn). They issued twice in 2025; a €1bn dual-tranche in April & a €500m 10yr in November.
  • Schlumberger Finance B.V. (exp. Issue ratings of A1 / A+ by Moody’s & S&P), guarantor SLB N.V. (SLB Limited), brought a € bmk long 8yr (3rd March 2035), senior unsecured, Reg S Bearer offering with IPTs of MS+130 to +135. Final books were over €1.95bn.
    • They have been absent from the public markets for over 6yrs, with proceeds from today's offering contributing towards a recent €1bn maturity last month, GCP of course, but also in part towards SLB’s recent $4.1bn acquisition of Germany based Kelvion.
  • Edenred SE (exp. Issue rating of A- by S&P) announced a senior unsecured dual-tranche, Reg S Bearer offering comprised of a €300m (wng) 2yr FRN with IPTs of 3mth+95 area; & a €500m (wng) Long 7yr (3rd February 2034) fixed rate with IPTs of MS+165 area. Final books came in over €600m for the 2yr & over €850m for the 7.25yr.
    • This is their second visit to the public € markets YTD, having printed a €500m 7yr in January, pricing at MS+107 B(38bps tighter than IPTs from a book of €1.65bn). They printed just once in 2025 with a €750m 5.5yr at MS+90 (40bps tighter than IPTs).
